SHOULD WE ASSOCIATE WITH A PERSON THAT OFFENDS US?

The Spiritual and Psychological Advisory Group will help us to understand the difference between Christian humility and the loss of human dignity. Till when should one forgive?

We have a right to associate with the people we want to and, on the contrary, to avoid associating with someone if we find it difficult.

The difference between Christian humility and the loss of human dignity consists in the following: Christian humility is the consciousness of one’s own sins and the ability to see good qualities in another person while the loss of dignity is the feeling of envy, hatred, malevolence, falsity, hypocrisy, etc.

We should remember that in a spiritual sense it is we who can really humiliate ourselves, while others’ treatment of us such as rudeness, indifference, stings, mockery, insults are like a boomerang which will return sooner or later to the one who has thrown it.

The main thing is to preserve your heart from offence and, still more, from the feeling of revengefulness. Let us pray for those who did us harm, let us not say anything bad about them; but at the same time let us remember that rescue and self-knowledge without suffering is not possible.

For example, let us think of two small bells: one made of iron and another one made of silver. They are similar to each other; but when struck they sound differently: iron’s sound is acute and hollow while silver’s sound is clear and melodious. Sufferings are strokes at our heart revealing what has been accumulated inside of it.
